SensorNet – Building an infrastructure for assisted living

Summary

As part of the Information Technology for Assisted Living at Home technology project we have started a subproject call SensorNet. The purpose of the project is to build prototypes of sensor network suitable for assisted living in and outside the home.

The project investigates how to integrate the use of basic sensor technologies; Berkeley Motes; ZigBee and Bluetooth communication technology and mobile devices into a network suitable for building services for assisted living.

Prototype Scenario

The basic concept in the first prototype scenario is that each user has his own Home Health System that is able to monitor the health of a patient. The monitoring data is either gathered from sensors mounted directly at the user and transmitted through a mobile gateway e.g. fall detectors or bio-monitors. Or the monitored data can be from sensors monitored in the home and transmitted directly to the home health system.

The user can grant other people access to the user’s health information e.g. relatives or the user can subscribe to a monitoring service that is able to respond if a person’s health data gets critical e.g. the blood pressure rises, a fall is detected. Figure 1 shows a schematic overview.
